THX, What It Is & Why It's Important.

“For manufacturing receivers and speakers, achieving the THX Reference Level is no simple task. It requires a tremendous amount of power to drive an audio system effortlessly without clipping or distorting. To ensure the audio products reach this peak performance THX developed a set of standards as part of its THX Dominus, THX Ultra, THX Select and Integrated System certifications.” –

What is THX?

Founded in 1983 with headquarters in San Francisco, California, THX is mainly a quality assurance system; THX develops standards that ensure high fidelity for movie theaters, screening rooms, home theaters, gaming consoles, and car audio systems. THX engineers complete scientifically-formulated tests to ensure the highest audio standards possible.

Why is THX Important?

As perfectly explained by THX “THX ensures nominal balance deviation between the left and right channels to create a well-transferred and well-balanced audio signal. The tests look for sufficient sensitivity levels to achieve a premium level of audio output, while maintaining minimal distortion at the required sound pressure level. THX engineers also look for virtually no crosstalk between channels to ensure the device will accurately reproduce the complexity of the spatial sound.”

However, balance in channels mentioned above shouldn’t be confused with left/right stereo balance. Balanced channels are important in order to reproduce highs, mids, and lows accurately which avoids distortions and picking up of unnecessary Noise, the crosstalk refers to the electromagnetic interference caused when adjacent pairs of wire interfere with each other. The 1MORE Triple Driver & Quad Driver In-Ear Earphones were the first ever pair of Earphones to achieve a THX certification which you read all about HERE.

Since THX isn’t a piece of technology or a specific recording format, it’s more of a Quality Assurance standard, THX-certified products provide a high-quality, predictable playback environment to ensure that any soundtrack mixed in THX’s Standards will sound as near as possible to the intentions of the mixing engineer. What all this means THX is a guarantee or assurance that the Visual or Audio output is exactly as how the creator intended it to be.
